Duomo Milan Events
Dates move. The Archdiocese sets the liturgical celebrations and the Veneranda Fabbrica sets the terrace openings. Both change at short notice, sometimes closing the cathedral to visitors on the day. Check the official programme linked at the foot of this page before you travel. If your date is fixed, book a tour that cancels free up to 24 hours ahead.
Four things happen at this cathedral that are worth arranging a trip around, and none of them is a ticketed concert. Two are liturgical, one puts a string quartet on the roof, and one shuts most of Milan for two days.
Triduum of the Holy Nail — 12 to 14 September 2026
The three days closest to 14 September, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. The Archbishop is raised into the vault on the Nivola to bring down the Holy Nail. It is the most Milanese thing that happens in this building. It is free, and almost no English-language guide mentions it.

Expect the nave to be busy and the choir in use. If you were coming for the architecture rather than the rite, the terraces run their normal hours throughout.
Serate d'Incanto — Thursdays, 11 June to 10 September 2026
Live music on the terraces every Thursday evening through the summer, with the programme coordinated by Matteo Amadasi and players from the G. Verdi Conservatoire in Milan. Rooftop access by lift for the evening is €20 full price and €10 reduced, and the start time moves with the sunset.

Buy through the Fabbrica's own site, or at the Group Ticket Office up to the last ascent. The 2026 season closes on Thursday 10 September. It has run every summer for several years, so a June trip next year is a fair bet rather than a promise.
7 December: Sant'Ambrogio
The feast of Ambrose, patron of Milan, and the day the city's Christmas starts. La Scala has opened its season on this date since 1951, the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! market runs around Sant'Ambrogio's own basilica, and the cathedral keeps a full feast-day timetable. Expect the square to be crowded and the shops open.
8 December: the Immaculate Conception
The Archbishop presides over a Pontifical Mass at 11am, preceded by Lauds at 10.25. At 4.30pm there are Vespers, a Marian procession and the Eucharistic Blessing. Together with the seventh it makes a two-day holiday in Milan; the cathedral is at its fullest and its most itself.
