11 Things to Do Near the Duomo Milan, With Hours, Prices and Closed Days

Nine sights sit within about 450 metres of the Duomo Milan: the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Museo del Novecento, Palazzo Reale with the Duomo Museum, San Gottardo in Corte, Piazza dei Mercanti, San Satiro, San Bernardino alle Ossa, the Ambrosiana and La Scala's museum. Sforza Castle and the Last Supper are a longer walk. Mondays and Wednesdays close several of them.

On Piazza del Duomo itself
1. Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II
Giuseppe Mengoni's arcade runs about 200 m from Piazza del Duomo to Piazza della Scala. It opened in 1867, unfinished; the arch onto the square came last, in 1871. Look up at the 47 m dome, then down: on the mosaic bull you spin a heel three times for luck.
2. Museo del Novecento
Twentieth-century art at Piazza Duomo 8. It opens Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 19:30, and on Thursdays until 22:30, so you can fit it in after dinner. A full ticket is €10. On the first Sunday of every month it is free for everyone, and on the second Tuesday it is free if you are 25 or under.
3. Palazzo Reale and the Duomo Museum
The royal palace next door runs exhibitions on the Novecento's hours, each priced on its own. Its ground floor holds the Duomo Museum, reinstalled in 2013, and your €10 cathedral ticket already pays for it. It is closed on Wednesdays; the full timetable is under hours and admission.

4. San Gottardo in Corte
You reach it from inside the Duomo Museum, on the same ticket and the same hours. What you are looking at is set out on what to see.
5. Piazza dei Mercanti
The medieval market square, a couple of minutes from the cathedral. The arcaded Palazzo della Ragione on it was begun in 1228 and finished in 1233, and its single upper hall measures 50 m by 18 m. You can walk under the arcade at any hour.
6. Santa Maria presso San Satiro
A small church with an optical trick in it. From the door you see a deep coffered choir behind the altar. Walk to the side of the altar and it flattens: the whole apse is 97 cm deep, painted and modelled by Bramante to read as 9.70 m.
7. San Bernardino alle Ossa
On Piazza Santo Stefano. Go through the narrow corridor immediately to the right of the entrance and you are in the ossuary chapel, its walls almost entirely covered in skulls and bones, with a vault frescoed by Sebastiano Ricci overhead.
Two museums about seven minutes west and north
8. Pinacoteca Ambrosiana
Home of Leonardo's Codex Atlanticus. It opens 10:00 to 18:00 except Wednesdays, and the ticket office shuts at 17:30. From 1 October 2026 one €20 ticket covers the Pinacoteca and the crypt. Allow 90 minutes for the gallery and 30 for the crypt.
9. Museo Teatrale alla Scala
At the far end of the Galleria. It opens daily 9:30am to 5:30pm, last entry 5pm, for €12. What you pay for is the look into the auditorium from the boxes, when no rehearsal or performance is on. It closes on 7, 25 and 26 December, 1 January, Easter, 1 May and 15 August.

Worth the longer walk
10. Sforza Castle and the Rondanini Pietà
About 1.3 km from the cathedral in a straight line. The courtyards are free every day from 07:00 to 19:30. The museums shut on Mondays and otherwise run 10:00 to 17:30, last entry 16:30. One €10 ticket opens all of them for the day, Ancient Egypt included, and you go free if you are under 18. The piece you walk this far for is Michelangelo's Rondanini Pietà, bought by the city in 1952 and in its own museum since 2 May 2015.
11. The Last Supper at Santa Maria delle Grazie
About twenty minutes on foot from the cathedral, and Milan's one UNESCO World Heritage inscription, since 1980. Your visit is a timed slot of about 15 minutes, which is why it has to be fixed first. Mondays, Wednesdays and the free first Sunday
- Monday: the Museo del Novecento, Palazzo Reale's exhibitions and the Sforza Castle museums are shut, but its courtyards stay open.
- Wednesday: the Duomo Museum, San Gottardo and the Ambrosiana are shut.
- First Sunday of the month: the Novecento and the Sforza Castle museums are free for everyone.
- Every day: La Scala's museum, outside its listed holidays.
